Week of Oct. 4 - 10, 2006(newstarnet.com)

COLORFUL PEAK FALL FOLIAGE EXPECTED TO ARRIVEIN SOME AREAS OF ADIRONDACKS THIS WEEKENDColors in Catskills, Other Areas of State Coming on Strong(newstarnet.com)

Now is time to head to New York’s Adirondacks region, where bright peak fall foliage is in abundance, according to observers for the Empire State Development Division of Tourism’s I LOVE NEW YORK program.(newstarnet.com)

For the coming weekend, look for brilliant peak foliage in the Franklin County communities of Mt. Arab and Tupper Lake. Leaf change is complete, highlighted by an array of bright shades including mustard, goldenrod, lemon, peach, rust, pumpkin, rhubarb, cranberry and crimson. Falling leaves are giving the hint that the peak is starting to wane, however, so it is best to head up to this beautiful area as soon as possible. You will find peak to just past peak foliage in Lake Placid, where leaf change is also just about complete and gold leaves are out in force, especially in Wilmington. Look for the most brilliant colors in the lower elevations. In the Warren County town of North Creek, peak foliage this weekend will be highlighted by bright shades of red, yellow and orange. In Hamilton County, Lake Pleasant projects 100 percent foliage change by the weekend, with average to brilliant brown and yellow leaves predominating the tree line. Greens are fading away with reds and purples coming to full color. Whiteface Mountain is expected to be just past peak this weekend, with 100 percent color change and slightly less than average brilliance highlighted by orange, gold and yellow leaves. Warren County’s Lake George is projecting peak foliage for the weekend, with 75 percent color change and red, yellow and orange leaves of average brilliance. Old Forge, in Herkimer County, will be near peak foliage, with 90-100 percent color change and orange, yellow and red leaves interspersed among the evergreens. In the lower elevations of Essex County, the Lake Champlain area will be around mid-point of transition with 50 percent color change and occasional sparks of colorful leaves of average brilliance, including yellow and orange. (newstarnet.com)

If you’re looking for peak to near-peak color in a more southern portion of the state, head to the Catskills region this weekend. Foliage spotters in Delaware County project brilliant peak colors of red, orange and green. Saugerties, in Ulster County, expects foliage change of 90 percent, with bright, near-peak red, yellow and some orange leaves. Also in Ulster County, Belleayre Mountain in Highmount projects 70 percent color change with dull-to-average red and gold leaves. Sullivan County will be near peak with 80 percent color change and predominately bright red, burgundy and gold leaves. (newstarnet.com)

In the Thousand Islands region, Canton, in St. Lawrence County, projects 80 percent color change with bright orange, red and yellow near-peak foliage. In Jefferson County, Alexandria Bay will be at mid-point of color change with yellow, red and orange leaves of average brilliance.(newstarnet.com)

Colors will be around mid-point throughout most of the Central Leatherstocking region this weekend. Binghamton, in Broome County, projects near peak foliage for the coming weekend with 55 percent color change and bright green, burgundy, burnt orange and gold leaves. In Schoharie County, foliage spotters at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site in Fort Hunter project 40 percent color change with dull-to-average light green, yellow, red and orange leaves. In Oneida County, Utica is projecting 50 percent color change with average-to-muted green, gold, orange and some red leaves. Southern Herkimer County and Chenango County will each be around 40 percent color change.(newstarnet.com)

In the Capital-Saratoga region, look for foliage around the mid-point of color change. In Rensselaer County, Grafton Lakes State Park will see 50 percent color change by weekend, with red and rust leaves of average brilliance. To the west, in Albany County, foliage spotters in the Thatcher Park area of Voorheesville expect 50-55 percent change highlighted by brilliant yellow leaves with touches of red. Schenectady County projects 35 percent change with bright splashes of red, yellow and gold leaves. (newstarnet.com)

Color change will vary greatly in the Greater Niagara region this weekend. Checking in with near-peak foliage is Lewiston, in Niagara County. There, look for brilliant yellow and orange leaves, highlighted by touches of red and green and an overall color change of 75 percent. Albion, in Orleans County, expects to be at mid-point of color progression, with 60 percent change and dull-to-average yellow, rust and red leaves. Also expected to be at mid-point of color change is Buffalo, in Erie County. Look for 35-40 percent color change; some bright orange is beginning to appear, along with the earlier more dominant bright crimson/cranberry and brilliant golden yellow. Wyoming County is heading toward mid-point of color change, with green, gold and some red leaves, while color change in Batavia, in Genesee County is still in the early stages. Some of the early yellow leaves have dropped and more orange and red is beginning to appear. (newstarnet.com)

Color progression in the Chautauqua-Allegheny region this weekend will generally be around mid-point. Chautauqua County expects 50-60 percent color change with average-to-bright orange highlights. Little Valley, in Cattaraugus County, expects 50 percent change, with bright red, yellow, orange and some green leaves. At Allegany State Park, foliage spotters also expect 50 percent change, with color advancing rapidly in selected locations of the park, highlighted by touches or red and orange. Belmont, in Allegany County, expects 40 percent color change, with dull green, yellow and orange leaves highlighted by splashes of red. (newstarnet.com)

You will find a wide range of color change in the Finger Lakes region this weekend. Up to 80 percent color change is expected in Tioga County, with near-peak colors of bright red, orange and yellow. Also nearing peak in the region is Schuyler County, with an expected 60 percent color change and green leaves painted with swaths of mustard, crimson, ruby, meringue, semolina, butterscotch and electric nectarine highlights. Foliage spotters in Rochester and the surrounding communities of Monroe County project anywhere from 30 to 50 percent color change by the weekend. Look for bright red, dull yellow, brown, dark russet, and dull green leaves. Some trees have not begun turning and remain dull green. Other regional counties expected to average mid-point foliage conditions this weekend include Cayuga, Cortland, Livingston, Onondaga, Seneca, Steuben, Tompkins and Yates. Wayne and Ontario counties project foliage conditions still in the early stages.(newstarnet.com)

Foliage this weekend in the Hudson Valley will still generally be in the early stages. Highland, in Ulster County, projects foliage change ranging from beginning to mid-point, with bright and beautiful red, yellow and orange leaves beginning to overtake the predominating green. Columbia County’s City of Hudson also expects 30 percent color change, with green, golden yellow and red leaves of average brilliance. Regional foliage stations checking in with conditions still in the early stages include White Plains, in Westchester County; Bear Mountain, in Rockland County; and Poughkeepsie, in Dutchess County.(newstarnet.com)

Foliage is just beginning to change in New York City and on Long Island. On Long Island, the Hamptons project 15 percent color change with a touch of dull red emerging from the mostly green leaves.(newstarnet.com)
